Weekly Update 8/26

This week in kindergarten:

We begin our regular classroom routines this week!!  Yea!  :)

*We are working on "names" this week.  We are practicing writing our names the correct way (first letter capital, rest lower case).  Try to encourage this at home as well.  In handwriting we will also be working on writing lower case l, t, i & j.
We will use the book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" as we talk about our names as well as learning the difference between capital letters and lower case letters.
*  We will learn that there are 3 ways to read a book:
  •      Read the words
  •      Read the pictures (tell a story using the pictures)
  •    Retell a familiar story
We will launch "Read to Self" as part of our Daily 5 routine.
* In math we begin Topic 1: Numbers 1-5.  We will work very hard on writing our numbers correctly and getting a true number sense for each number 1-5.  We will use our math lessons as well as number boards using tally marks, dot cubes, 10 frames etc.
You will see math pages coming home from our EnVision math curriculum.  Each Topic will start with a school to home connection.  You do not need to return these to class.  They are for you to keep at home.
We also started daily math journals in class today!
We are introducing math materials and exploring with different materials every day as we prepare to launch "math stations" very soon!

Please check your child's red folder on Mondays.  Notes from the school and/or PTO will always come home in folders on Monday.  Thank you for returning these every day!

Important dates to remember this week:
Tuesday, August 27th:  DIBELS testing.  Each child will be given the DIBELS assessment.  This is a tool our district uses to assess pre-reading skills for students K-2.  This is a short timed test and I will share the results at parent teacher conferences in September.
Wednesday, August 28th:  RED day!  We will learn to read and write the color word red.  Have your child wear as much red as possible on Wednesday.

We do not have school next Monday as we observe Labor Day.  Tuesday, September 3rd is Parent Information Night for kindergarten parents at 6:00.  (parents only)
