Weekly Update 10/14

This week in kindergarten:
**  Math stations are up and running!!

*  We are learning about community helpers this week.  The Shawnee firefighters will be visiting tomorrow to teach us about fire trucks and fire safety.  This is a good week to have your child review their address and phone number.  They might come home tomorrow and ask you to check your smoke detectors!  :)
*  In our reading program we will begin a new unit - What Animals Need.  We continue to talk about non-fiction text and the features that we see in these books.  We have discovered the Table of Contents, the Glossary and the Index.  We will work on the comprehension strategy of "asking questions."  It is important to ask questions as we read.

*  In math we will begin Topic 4 - Comparing and ordering numbers 1-10
*  In handwriting we will finish practicing the lower case alphabet with x, y & z.
*  This Wednesday will be PINK day.  I understand if their are some boys who do not own and/or want to wear pink.  :)  That's OK!  I will suggest to them that they might wear white to go along with the pink.
*  Thursday is school picture day.
*  Reminder:  reading logs for our school wide reading program should be turned in by Tuesday of each week.  Most students brought them in today!!  Wow - great reading kindergarten!!!
*  If you would like to order from the October Scholastic Book Order - please have your order turned in tonight.  Go to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs  Our class code is GMMD6.
*  School is not in session this Friday (10/18) or Monday (10/21) due to professional development.  This Thursday marks the end of 1st quarter.
*  If you are interested in volunteering in our classroom in November - the Sign Up Genius is ready:

Please do not sign up for more than 2 slots.  You may go back to the sign up Nov. 1 and if there are slots that are not filled in - you may then add more dates if you like.
Thank you for your help in our classroom!
