Weekly Update 3/24

This week in kindergarten:
Wow!  We are in the home stretch now!  Only 9 weeks left in our kindergarten year.  I can't believe how quickly the time has gone.  We will make a final push in academics and social skills as we prepare for first grade.  They have already been hearing about "first grade behavior" from me.  :)

*  In reading we are starting a new theme:  My Friends.  Our comprehension focus is using "fix up strategies" and decoding.
*  In writing we will look at changing a word by adding s, ed and ing.
*  In math we continue to work on telling time to the hour and half hour during small groups.  We will begin Topic 13 for whole group math: Sorting, Classifying, Counting and Categorizing Data.  We will have plenty of sorting and graphing opportunities in math stations.
During our morning math meeting we are looking at odd and even numbers and counting by 2s to 20.
*  Dad's Door Contest update:  We won the door contest for our grade level.  Soooo....we have won a pajama day!!  We will wear pajamas to school this Thursday, 3/27.  Slippers are fine - bring other shoes for recess.  Thanks to the dads!!!
*  We will have a guidance lesson with Ms. Brown on Friday.

I have enjoyed hearing the students tell me about all of the fun things they did over spring break.  They shared stories with me, with their partner and wrote about their spring break happenings as well.  I was able to share with them a few pictures and videos of my spring break.  My family and I followed the DeSoto High School band on their trip to New Orleans.  150 band members participated in this trip (including my freshman daughter).  This was my first time to New Orleans and we had a wonderful experience.  Here are a few pictures from our spring break:

We went on a swamp tour and held an alligator.
