weekly update 4/18

This week in kindergarten:
*  We have started a new theme:  Where I Live.  The comprehension strategy is to create images using visuals.
* We have started reading a chapter book in class for 5 minutes every day and we are working very hard at creating images (since there are not as many pictures in chapter books).  The kiddos love listening to a chapter a day.  We started with an easy book:  Junie B. Jones.  When we finish with this book we will begin Charlotte's Web.  The chapters are longer and there are fewer pictures.  This is something you can do at home as well.  Choose a book and read a chapter a night.  Ask open ended questions at the end of each chapter.  Make predictions about what will happen next etc.
*  We will focus on the letter and sound for Zz.  Our sight words this week are walk & too.  Our vocab words are march, country & past.
*  In math we will explore tangrams, sort & identify tangram pieces and estimate and measure length using non-standard units.
*  We will celebrate Earth day on Thursday with our final ETC day of the year.  The students will rotate through 7 stations learning about recycling and taking care of the earth.
*  Don't forget to send in self opening fruit cups as we help to do our part with the Harvesters Lunch Pack Challenge.  Thank you so very much for your donations!!
*  There is no school this Friday 4/22!  We DO have school on Monday 4/25.
*  Pictures are coming home today for PM class and tomorrow for AM class.  If you would like to order just return a check to school.  If not, please return the packet of pictures.
*  Thank you to all of my wonderful volunteers!  If you volunteer in my classroom - please stop by the PRE office to pick up a potted flower as a thank you from PRE!!
*  Please make note of the schedule change for the last week of April.  You can make the following changes on the calendar in your child's folder.  Mon - E / Tue - C / Wed - D / Thurs - E / Fri - A
*  We had 3 chicks that hatched last night.  The kiddos were so excited when they came to school today!  We have had 3 more hatch during the day.  (the PM class saw one of them hatch) Pictures below.  I have also taken a LOT of video.  I will go through the video clips and post some by tomorrow.  I was able to get video of two actually hatching!!
