weekly update 9/7/11

This week in kindergarten:

*  We begin a new theme:  Schools Have Rules.  Our comprehension strategy for this theme is "determining importance."   Our vocabulary words are rules, teach & citizen. Our sight words are you & on.

*  We will focus on the letter and sound for F /f/. 

*  The students are learning to write their name the correct way.  This is beginning the name with a capital letter and using lower case letters for the rest of the name.  Please encourage this at home as well (vs capital and lower case letters mixed throughout).

*  We continue to work on our "sky writing" for our numbers 0-10.  We are working on correct formation.

*  The PM class will meet with 4th grade buddies for the first time on Friday.  The AM class will meet their 4th grade buddies next Friday.  We will meet with our buddy class once a month as the 4th graders will work with kindergarten on various reading, writing and math skills. 

*  Scholastic book orders are due this Friday.  If you would like to order books you can follow this link. The class code is GMMD6.  The class loved a book we read last week - The Pout Pout Fish.  I know it is available on the See Saw order if you are interested.  There is also a sequel - The Pout Pout Fish in the Big Big Dark. 
*  It seems that my picture of our behavior chart (that I have placed on your child's daily calendar) is wrong.  The purple should be the last color on the chart.  Pink and purple were reversed.  If you will just keep that in mind this month.  Next month I will make sure to note that with an arrow on the chart. 
*  Please remember to save your frosting containers and send to school as we will use these as coin collectors as we start our community service project in the next month.  Thank you so much for your help!!
*  See pictures below of how we are doing with "Read to Self" time.  We will begin our practice of our second Daily 5 center tomorrow (Read to Someone).
