Weekly Update 11/5/12

This week in kindergarten:
*We continue with our theme in reading "Who I Am."  We continue to talk about the vowels - the short vowel sounds and the long vowel sounds (as well as "bossy e").  We are focusing on "fix up strategies" in whole group and small reading groups.  Our vocab words this week are positive, special & bone.  Sight words are go & at. 
For handwriting this week we will practice the capital letters I, H, C, O. 
Our color word this week is white.  We will learn to spell and read the word white.  Wear as much white as you can this Wednesday!
*In math we will begin Topic 5 tomorrow - numbers to 20! 
*  Today in class we talked about the election.  We discussed what an election is, who the 2 candidates are etc.  We watched a video version of the book "Duck For President."  You can view the story here. Tomorrow in class every student will be able to vote for who they think should be the next president.  I have told the kindergarten students to go home and talk about this with mom and dad and be ready to come to school tomorrow to vote. 
*  In your child's folder you will find information on voting for our school for the Power A Bright Future Grant through Clorox.  Please take time to vote every day!!  Have your extended family and friends vote as well.  Think about how awesome it would be to have extra technology in our classrooms (I Pads, Smart Boards etc).  Here is the link to vote.  The first time you go to this website you will need to register.  After that it will be super easy - you just click VOTE!  http://www.vote232.com/
*  Scholastic book orders are due tomorrow.  If you would like to order please go to Scholastic.  Our class code is GMMD6.
*  This Friday we will meet with our 4th grade buddies!
*  We have a special visitor on November 16th.  Happy Bear will be visiting the kindergarten students (he comes to us from the Sunflower House).  More information will be coming home on Happy Bear's visit.  However, we are looking for someone to help us.  We need one volunteer from AM and one from PM to dress up in the Happy Bear costume on that day.  AM class would be 11-11:30 and PM class would be 1-1:30.  Let me know if you would be willing to do this.  :)
