Weekly Update 8/22

This week in kindergarten:
*  We will begin our study of The 7 Habits of Happy Kids.  We will begin with the first habit: Be Proactive.  We will cover one habit a week for the next 7 weeks.

*  We will also begin digging into The Essential 55.  This is a book written by master teacher Ron Clark.  He has 55 basic manners that are expected in the classroom and in life.  I have adapted these manners to be kindergarten appropriate.  We will go through 2 a day during our morning meeting.  I will post the 2 we talk about each day on See Saw so that you may have discussions at home as well.
*  Heart Words (sight words): Your child is bringing home a set of sight words in their folder. Please help your child cut out each heart and glue it onto a notecard.  Place all 20 cards into a sandwich bag and write your child's name on the bag.  Please return these to school.  We will keep them in our drawers for practicing.  There is a 2nd set for you to keep for practicing at home.  Our goal is to know 10 sight words by the end of 1st quarter.  I told the students that this was their homework for the week.  I also told them that they need to cut out at least 3 of the hearts by themselves (practice holding scissors correctly). I would like to have these returned to school by Monday, August 29th.  Thank you!
* We will experience a lot of "firsts" this week!
*We completed our first journal entry.  Journals will come home every Friday.  These are something I would save and treasure.  The growth you will see from their first journal to their last journal will amaze you!
*  We will begin our first math lesson today.  Math topic #1 is "Numbers to 5."  I know that most of the students know their numbers and can count.  We will focus more on number sense and writing the numbers correctly using proper  form.  Writing letters and numbers can be frustrating and we usually have a few tears.  I try to encourage them not to be too hard on themselves.  This is why we are in school - to practice and learn.  (the video below will help)
On a side note, we began practicing writing our name the correct way - first letter capital, rest lower case.  Please have your child practice this at home as well.

*We started learning sign language for the ABC's.  We learn the sign for each letter and then we have an action that goes with the letter sound.  If your child wants to get a head start and practice more of the letters you can find a great video with this link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M1ky9_nm4Y
*  We will be decorating All About Me bags on Tuesday.  They will come home in backpacks and should be returned on Friday.  Your child may place 3 items in the bag that they will share with the class to help tell a little bit about them.  The items must be small enough to fit in the bag.  Examples might be: a sports trophy, a family vacation picture, a favorite book, a special toy etc.  Have your child practice what they will say at home.  They will each share their items on Friday.
*  Wednesday will be RED day.  We will learn how to read and spell the color red.  We always have fun with these color days and ask the children to wear the color of the day if they have it.
*  Please remember to return daily folders to school each day in your child's backpack.
 *  I would love donations of frosting containers throughout the school year.  I will begin saving these for next year's class to use for crayon containers.  Thank you!!
